What do people ask most about unemployment in Utah?
Short answer
Yes, you can work part time and still be paid: Utah leaves 30% of your weekly benefit amount clear and takes every dollar above that off the week's payment. A week you work 40 hours or more pays nothing.

Report the earnings from every week you claim, including a week the allowance covers them completely. The answers below are short, and each one links to the page carrying the rule and the arithmetic behind it.
Can you work part time and still be paid in Utah?
Yes. Part-time earnings do not close a Utah claim, and a week you earn less than your weekly benefit amount is a week you can still claim. Carry on filing each week, put that week's earnings on the claim, and Workforce Services works out what the week pays. Reporting a week you worked covers the filing side of it.
What percentage can you earn before Utah cuts a payment?
The earnings allowance is 30% of your weekly benefit amount, and it is measured against your benefit rather than against your old wage or your old hours, so it is a different figure for every claim. Under the allowance, a week's payment is not reduced at all. Over it, every dollar comes off the payment until the week pays nothing. What a part-time week pays runs the Department's own worked example through.
How many hours can you work on a Utah claim?
Hours settle a week at one line only: work 40 hours or more and that week pays nothing, whatever you were paid for them. Under that line the money decides it and the clock does not, so the useful question is what the week earned you, not how long it took. The arithmetic for a week under that line sits on how much it pays.
Claims are picked for audit at random every week, and auditors verify the work and earnings reported for any week filed. Earnings left off a weekly claim come back as an overpayment, which you repay or which Workforce Services takes out of later weeks.
How do you close a Utah unemployment claim?
Nothing has to be filed to close one. Workforce Services closes a claim by itself once you stop filing for 27 days from the Saturday that ended the last week you filed, or once you report earnings at or above your weekly benefit amount for 4 weeks running. Closing it yourself is also possible: once you are back to work, tell Live Chat or the CARE Team, though the Department says the plainest route is just to stop filing. The benefit year runs on either way, so work that does not last usually means reopening the claim you already have. Closing a claim, and starting it again has reopening, and how cancelling differs from closing.
How do you appeal a Utah unemployment overpayment?
The same way you appeal a denial, on the same clock: 15 calendar days from the date printed on the decision, unless the decision itself specifies otherwise. What changes is the argument, because an overpayment turns on fault, and fault is what decides whether you owe the money at all. Keep filing a weekly claim for every week you are out of work while the appeal runs. How to appeal an overpayment has the route, the address, and the waiver.
Can a contractor or self-employed person file in Utah?
File, and let the Division decide it. A Utah claim is built from the wages employers reported for insured work in your base period, and the Notice of Monetary Determination tells you what is on the record under your name. Whether the work was really contract work is the Division's finding to make, not the payer's. Self-employment and commission sales also go on the weekly claim, and taking part in either can end a claim even in a week that earned you nothing. If you were paid as an independent contractor has what to do.
Can school staff file over the summer in Utah?
Sometimes, and it turns on reasonable assurance rather than on the calendar. Where the benefits rest on work for an educational institution and there is a contract or reasonable assurance of the same work in the next term, the weeks between terms are denied. Where that assurance never turns into a job, a retroactive payment reaches the weeks that were claimed on time, which is the reason to go on filing through a denial. Can school staff file over the summer has both capacities, and the vacation and holiday recess rule.
Can a federal worker draw during a government shutdown?
Utah's unemployment law counts benefits payable to federal civilian employees and to ex-servicemen inside its definitions of regular and of extended benefits, so a furloughed federal worker files here like anybody else. Back pay is what changes the ending. After the 2025 partial shutdown, Workforce Services told furloughed federal workers who had drawn benefits that back pay was coming and that the benefit paid while they were furloughed would have to be repaid. Can a furloughed federal worker draw in Utah? has the letters to expect.
How do you claim unemployment benefits in Utah, week by week?
File online at jobs.utah.gov first. If you cannot get online, the Department's unemployment home page puts the Claims Assistance and Re-Employment Team on 801-526-4400 beside the website as a way to apply, and a representative may still point you back at the site. Then file a weekly claim for every week you want paid, the weeks you spend waiting on a decision included. How to file has what to have ready, and weekly claims has the job contacts each week needs.
What else can help while you are out of work in Utah?
A job loss usually puts more than the claim in play. Food aid and health coverage each have an application of their own, on the Department's own pages, and 211 is somewhere to start if you are not sure which of Utah's other programs fits.
- Food aid. SNAP helps you get healthy food, though most families still spend some of their own money alongside it to buy everything they need. Utah takes an application online at jobs.utah.gov/mycase, which the Department calls the easiest, in person at an employment center, or by post, by calling 801-526-0950 or 866-435-7414 to ask for one to be mailed, though the Department warns that route might take longer and could delay your benefits. Benefits start on the day you apply, so apply as soon as you think you might qualify; an eligibility specialist decides whether you actually do. An applicant who qualifies for expedited service may have benefits within 7 days, needing only proof of identity.
- Health coverage. Utah's Medicaid and medical assistance program covers medical expenses for certain groups of people with limited income and resources, and its pages set out which groups those are.
- 211. Dial 211, or 888-826-9790 from a mobile device, Monday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., for free, confidential help in multiple languages from the United Ways of Utah. Chat runs the same hours Monday to Friday, or text your zip code to 801-845-2211 for a live Service Navigator by text.
