What number do you call about a Utah unemployment claim?

Utah splits its unemployment help by region and by subject, so the line that answers a question about your payment is not the line that answers a question about your appeal. The employment centers are a third thing again, and what they will and will not do about a claim is below.

Which number to call about what

The Claims Assistance and Re-Employment Team and Live Chat both keep the same hours: Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech impairment, you may call Relay Utah by dialing 711 to reach any of them. Auxiliary aids and services are available on request to individuals with disabilities by calling 801-526-9240.

If you cannot get online

Utah's Employment Centers do not have unemployment insurance information and cannot help you with your unemployment claim. The Department says that itself, and it points claimants to the Live Chat feature in their "my Unemployment" account or to the CARE Team instead. Left there, that reads as no route at all for someone without a computer, so here is the rest of what the Department publishes. One of them does not need a sign-in at all: the Department's own electronic Feedback Form takes a request, question, comment, problem, or suggestion with no account behind it, for anyone who can get online just long enough to submit it.

Its own documents disagree about filing by phone, and all of them are current. The unemployment home page says the only method to apply for benefits, enter direct deposit information, or make any changes is through the official state website or by calling the Claims Assistance and Re-Employment Team at 801-526-4400. The guide for laid-off workers says that if you cannot use the Internet, you can file by phone, on the same regional numbers as the table above. The claimant guide says claims are not taken over the phone and sends anyone having difficulty to Live Chat. So the phone is worth using, and a representative may still direct you back to the website.

In person, a center does more than it will discuss with you:

• Job seekers who do not have Internet access or need assistance can go to any of the employment centers, where there are job connection areas with staff available to help. Call 801-526-0950 or 866-435-7414.
• The Job Connection Rooms provide Internet access along with Information Specialists to help you reach services and resources. Fax and copy machines are also available.
• The Department's own rule says an appeal may be filed with the Appeals Unit or at any Department employment center.
• If you have no access to a telephone for an appeal hearing, contact the Appeals Unit right away and arrange to use a telephone at a Workforce Services office near you.

Where to post or fax an appeal

The Appeals Unit takes initial appeals and general questions on 801-526-9300, or toll free on 1-877-800-0671. Post an appeal to PO Box 45244, Salt Lake City, UT 84145-0244, and copy the ZIP code exactly, including the part after the hyphen. Fax: 801-526-9242.

The Workforce Appeals Board, which reviews an administrative law judge's decision, uses the same post office box and answers on 801-526-9310. Its fax is 801-526-9244.

How to send paper

Paperwork about your own claim goes to a different address and different fax numbers than an appeal does.

Help in Spanish

The Department prints one number for Spanish speakers beside its own: Spanish Relay Utah, 1-888-346-3162. It belongs to the same relay service as the 711 line above, so use it to place a call to one of the numbers in the table rather than as a claims desk of its own.

Employment centers and how to reach them

Not every center opens every weekday. Junction opens on Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Loa opens on Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Park City opens Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the hours before you travel.
